Iyad Madani, former Saudi minister of Haj and information, is
likely to be appointed the next secretary-general of the 56-member
Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
“The three African candidates have withdrawn their nominations. Saudi Arabia’s candidate Madani remains the only one to win the position,” said Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Amr Ramadan.
If his appointment is confirmed by the OIC leaders during their Feb. 6-7 summit in Cairo, Madani will become the 10th secretary-general of the Jeddah-based organization.
Madani succeeds Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, whose term expires in the end of this year, the Egyptian minister said following a meeting of senior OIC officials in Cairo.
Ramadan commended Ihsanoglu’s contributions to strengthen the organization. “He has carried out his mission excellently and efficiently at a time when the Islamic world has been going through difficult times,” he added.
During a conference in Djibouti last year, OIC foreign ministers had welcomed Madani’s nomination and pledged their support to the Kingdom’s candidate. If appointed, Madani will be the first Saudi to fill the key position.
Madani was minister of Haj until 2005. Then he served as minister of culture and information from 2005 to 2009. He was appointed chairman of the Board of Directors of Knowledge Economic City in Madinah last March, replacing Sami Mohsen Baroum.
He also serves as vice president of King Abdullah Foundation for Housing Development. He was board member of several important organizations including the King Abdul Aziz Foundation for the Gifted and the Supreme Commission for Tourism.
